Agaricus Violaceus — Plate III
Agaricus Violaceus — Plate III is an early nineteenth-century botanical study from Romanus Adolph Hedwig's Observationum botanicarum fasciculus primus, published in Leipzig in 1802. Two numbered mushroom specimens are arranged along the center of a broad cream-colored sheet, with the original name Agaricus violaceus written beneath them.
The upper study shows the mushroom upright beneath a dark cap, while the larger lower figure exposes the richly colored gills and substantial stem. Fine engraved lines and restrained hand coloring combine charcoal gray, rust red, brown, muted orange, and small touches of green. Generous negative space gives this scientific plate an unusually quiet and graphic presence.
