This enhanced-color orbital image presents a small impact crater within a field of scalloped terrain on Mars. Cool blue-gray shadows, warm rim highlights, and finely textured plains reveal a landscape shaped by impact processes and the gradual loss of buried water ice.

Captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the scene may show a slightly expanded crater evolving among nearby scalloped depressions. These landforms are linked to sublimation, in which subsurface ice changes directly into vapor over long periods of time.
