Irish Setter, Rover presents a nineteenth-century sporting dog in a poised, alert stance. Rover turns his head across his body while lifting one foreleg, his long feathered tail extending upward behind him. Grasses and foliage establish a simple field setting around the figure.

Fine linear engraving and cross-hatching describe the dog's coat, anatomy, vegetation, and softly rendered background. The dark figure against warm cream paper gives the illustration the direct character of a Victorian natural-history plate. Rover appeared in John Henry Walsh's The Dogs of Great Britain, America, and Other Countries, where he was discussed as an example of the Irish Setter.
