This is the oldest image of the universe known to mankind. This is an artifact that does not exceed a dinner plate in size and is made of bronze and found at the top of a hill in Germany in the year 1999. The Nebra Sky Disk dating back to 1600 BC comprises depictions of the sun, a crescent moon, and stars forming a tight constellation. There are two arcs on the disk and the angle between them is 82 degrees which equates to the summer and winter solstices. At some point in time about 3,600 years ago, someone managed to capture the movements of the entire sky in one portable object.
This marks the beginning of cosmic landscape art. Not with paintings hung in galleries or photographs taken by NASA, but with the very human necessity of bringing infinity down to earth.

Cosmic Landscapes Began as a Visual Challenge
Back then, astronomy and visual culture did not differ from each other – they were actually identical. For instance, in Egyptian temple architecture, Nut is depicted as stretching across the skies – her body becomes the sky. The second case in point is the Dendera Zodiac that comes from 50 BCE, where it could be seen in the temple of Hathor. It is a representation of the constellations inside a circle in twisted-profile visuals characteristic of Egypt. Yes, this is a celestial calendar; however, at the same time, this is a way to solve the dilemma – how to transfer the three-dimensional space like the sky to a two-dimensional one without destroying its proportions.
It was exactly this task that was solved by Albrecht Dürer in 1515 with his woodcuts of the Northern and Southern Celestial Hemispheres. The earlier charts had all been hand-drawn, making them difficult to reproduce. Dürer's woodcut technique meant exact reproductions could circulate across Europe, included in major astronomical texts. The maps show constellations as mythological figures, Orion, Medusa and Perseus, the Great Bear, with four celebrated ancient astronomers framed at each corner. Both scientific diagram and visual portrait, all at once.

When the Sky Stopped Being Perfect?
For centuries, the heavens depicted in the Western tradition were a symbol of perfect order in contrast to the disorder of earthbound existence. However, Galileo fashioned his own telescope in 1609 and trained it on the moon for 19 consecutive nights. The illustrations featured in Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius (Starry Messenger), written in 1610, showed the moon’s rugged terrain of craters, hills, and valleys. The heavens gained geology. A symbolic realm became a physical place.
That single shift sent artists in two directions. Some chased scientific precision. Others chased something harder to name: how the cosmos actually feels.

The Romantic Painters and the Cosmic Landscape
It would be Caspar David Friedrich who found the solution to the feeling problem visually. The painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog," which was made by him in 1818, features an image of a lonely human whose back faces the viewer. He is standing alone on a huge white foggy hill. The sky dominates the whole scene. Man is tiny, nature is massive, and this tension between man and nature carries the emotional weight of the work.
This is not about fog in Friedrich’s painting; rather, it is about the sensation of looking at something larger than oneself. This composition – a tiny figure, an overwhelming sky/land-scape – has been one of the most enduring compositions in the field of visual arts since then. It still persists in today’s space photography, science-fiction book covers, and documentary films.

Van Gogh carried that emotional logic to another extreme. Van Gogh's painting, The Starry Night, done in June 1889 from the window of his asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, is not an attempt at realism of the night sky. Stars flow from the center out in thick rings. The entire sky revolves. A black cypress tree rises from the bottom of the painting to the top of it like a black flame. Astronomers have since discovered that the star placements on the painting correspond reasonably well to what van Gogh saw from that window; but the strength of the painting does not lie in its realism.

Chesley Bonestell and the Cosmic Landscape as Visual Speculation
But no event in the annals of cosmic art had as radical an impact upon the art form as a particular work of art featured in Life magazine on May 29, 1944. It was a picture by Chesley Bonestell depicting Saturn as seen from Titan. No spacecraft had visited Titan. No camera had confirmed what it looked like. Bonestell built the image using available astronomy and the precision drafting techniques he'd developed earlier as an architectural renderer and Hollywood matte painter.
The painting looked like a photograph from a place that didn't exist yet.
It was after this that Carl Sagan came to realize that he did not know how the other planets appeared until he saw the paintings of Bonestell. The painting attracted a whole generation of scientists and writers to follow careers in the realm of astronomy and space travel, earning Bonestell the nickname “the father of modern space art.” In his future work on Willy Ley’s book, “The Conquest of Space” and the Collier’s magazine series “Man Will Conquer Space Soon”, Bonestell formulated a complete visual language of space travel, many years before cameras could confirm or deny its validity.

The Photograph Which Changed the Appearance of the Universe
A picture was taken by an American astronaut named William Anders, who was orbiting around the Moon in the Apollo 8 spacecraft on December 24, 1968. From the picture, we can see that the Earth is blue and white in color and appears small and alone, rising up from the grey colored surface of the moon. Everything that divides it, borders, nations, geography as territory, is invisible.
Earthrise didn't just document a place. It reframed the planet as a fragile object in a much larger context. Environmental movements throughout the early 1970s regularly cited it. The cosmic landscape, for the first time, looked back at us.

How the James Webb Telescope Made Cosmic Images Into Color Designs?
In every photograph taken by the James Webb Space Telescope there is a process that is very often overlooked, and this process is color translation. As we already know, infrared light is not visible to the human eye, and scientists use visible colors for different wavelengths. Someone has to decide what frequency of light will be shown in purple, orange, or gold.
The Webb photograph of the Pillars of Creation, the three columns of gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula 6,500 light-years away from Earth, taken in October 2022, demonstrates the image of these columns as warm copper and golden, with blue shadows and red spots on the edges of columns that are locations of young star formation. The boundary between data visualization and visual art has rarely been this thin.

How Do Today’s Artists Work on the Cosmic Landscape?
In the artwork of Yayoi Kusama entitled "Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away" (2013), the artist positions LED lights in various colors in a mirrored room in a way that the reflections of these lights would multiply themselves and give the impression of traveling through space without any restrictions. It is not a picture of the space; rather, it is more similar to the feeling of scale, which Friedrich tried to convey in 1818, only through different means.
The Chinese artist Liu Kuo-sung began painting the series of abstract space-related pictures after the Moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. Liu's unique approach involved dragging paper through pigmented water to create the effect of brushwork using specially created rough cotton paper and dragging fiber strands to stamp white lines onto the dried ink. The images are somewhere between traditional ink washes and something else, namely planetary spheres floating above dark expanses that are not entirely earthly or imaginary.

Nebra Sky Disk is displayed at the State Museum of Prehistory in Germany. It has remained buried for around 3,600 years and it has been discussed in many books related to astronomy, archaeology, ancient civilizations and visual arts. What the disk is, most likely an instrument used to measure seasonal time, cannot be separated from its appearance - accurate and beautiful. That combination has defined cosmic landscape art at every scale and medium since.
The landscape hasn't changed. What changes, generation by generation, is what we need the sky to mean.
