The Art of OMNI Magazine: Chrome, Dread, and the Images That Treated the Future Like a Fact

The figure is looking directly at you. Its surface is smooth, reflective and too carefully engineered to feel entirely human. The background offers almost no context. There is no room, landscape or recognizable machine to explain what you are seeing. The image simply occupies the page and waits for you to respond.

This kind of encounter became central to the visual world of OMNI. Launched in 1978 by Kathy Keeton and Bob Guccione, the magazine brought science journalism, speculative fiction, technology, the paranormal and ambitious visual art into the same glossy format.

Its images did not merely illustrate articles about the future. They gave that future a surface, a temperature and a physical presence. Sometimes it appeared cold and metallic. Elsewhere it was biological, atmospheric, erotic, spiritual or quietly threatening. What held these different worlds together was the seriousness with which the magazine treated them.

A Magazine That Gave Art Room to Breathe

The first issue already established much of the magazine’s visual confidence. Pete Turner’s cover photograph, Road Song, transforms an ordinary stretch of asphalt into a highly controlled field of red, blue and black. The image is photographic, but its simplified color and almost abstract composition make it feel less like documentation than a signal from somewhere ahead.

The OMNI logo sits prominently at the top, yet the surrounding typography remains restrained. The image is allowed to establish the mood before the cover lines explain the contents. That balance would change from issue to issue, but the underlying principle remained recognizable: the artwork was not treated as leftover space around editorial information.

According to the publisher of the 2014 retrospective The Mind’s Eye: The Art of Omni, Guccione personally selected many of the artists and illustrators who contributed to the magazine. His background as a painter appears to have shaped an editorial environment in which fantasy art, commercial illustration, photography and surrealism could be presented with unusual prominence.

The result was not a single house style. OMNI’s identity came from the collision of several styles that were often treated separately elsewhere.

H.R. Giger and the Anxiety of the Machine

H.R. Giger’s work gave OMNI one of its darkest visual languages. His forms appear engineered and anatomical at the same time. Vertebrae become structural supports. Tubes resemble veins or organs. Mechanical joints seem capable of experiencing pain.

The images are often described as biomechanical, but the term alone does not explain their effect. Giger did not simply attach metal parts to human bodies. He made it difficult to determine where the organism ended and the machine began.

His limited palettes intensified that uncertainty. Black, grey and muted metallic tones reduced the distinction between skin, bone, pipework and shadow. The surfaces could appear wet, polished or fossilized depending on how the light moved across them.

Within a conventional science magazine, imagery this unsettling might have been confined to an article about horror films or speculative fiction. In OMNI, it could appear alongside writing about biology, computing, space travel or the future of the human body.

That editorial context changed how the artwork operated. Giger’s forms no longer represented only imaginary creatures. They also suggested an uncomfortable version of technological development in which invention and anatomy had become permanently entangled.

Hajime Sorayama and the Seduction of Chrome

Hajime Sorayama used many of the same materials—airbrushed gradients, reflective metal and human-machine hybrids—but produced a very different emotional effect.

Where Giger’s machines seem to grow inward, Sorayama’s figures are defined by their surfaces. Chrome follows the curves of the body with almost photographic precision. Highlights stretch across shoulders, limbs and faces. Reflections imply a surrounding world that often remains invisible outside the figure.

The metal does not conceal the body. It exaggerates it.

This makes Sorayama’s work both futuristic and closely connected to fashion, advertising and pin-up illustration. The figures are presented rather than discovered. They pose, turn and frequently return the viewer’s gaze. Technology appears less as an external tool than as a perfected skin.

The contrast between Sorayama and Giger reveals something important about OMNI. The magazine could publish two artists associated with airbrush, metallic bodies and speculative technology without reducing them to the same idea of the future.

Giger’s surfaces suggest contamination and loss of control. Sorayama’s promise polish, desire and impossible perfection. One makes the machine feel organic; the other makes the body feel manufactured.

John Berkey and the Atmosphere of Deep Space

John Berkey moved away from the controlled figure and toward environments so large that their boundaries seem to dissolve beyond the image.

His spacecraft are rarely presented as clean technical diagrams. Their structures emerge through layers of light, vapor, darkness and color. Small details suggest windows, engines or mechanical divisions, but the whole object is not always fully explained.

This incompleteness creates scale. A ship feels enormous because parts of it disappear into haze or extend beyond the composition. Space becomes an atmosphere rather than an empty black field.

Next to Giger’s dense anatomy and Sorayama’s immaculate chrome, Berkey’s work can feel almost impressionistic. His images rely on suggestion rather than hard-edged precision. The future is still technologically advanced, but it is no longer sterile. It glows, burns and disappears into its own weather.

That shift in temperature helped prevent OMNI’s visual world from becoming a catalogue of metallic humanoids. The magazine could move from the intimacy of a face or body to the scale of planetary systems without abandoning its larger interest in the unknown.

Surrealism Beyond Machines

Not every OMNI image depended on robots, spaceships or visible technology. Artists including Robert Venosa, Rafal Olbinski, Robert McCall, Rallé and others expanded the magazine’s visual vocabulary in different directions.

McCall’s engineered habitats and space infrastructure gave speculative ideas a sense of architectural credibility. Olbinski used familiar objects and classical compositional order to construct impossible visual metaphors. Venosa created luminous figures and environments in which bodies appeared to emerge from color, light and inner space.

These artists did not all imagine the same future. Some looked outward toward space exploration and large-scale infrastructure. Others turned inward toward consciousness, dreams and altered perception.

Venosa later credited OMNI with giving artists unusual visibility and helping bring fantastic, surreal and visionary painting into mainstream publishing. His work reportedly appeared on covers and inside more than 25 issues.

That breadth matters because OMNI did not define futurism only through hardware. A future could be represented by an orbital settlement, but it could also appear as a landscape of the mind, a symbolic transformation of the body or an impossible object painted with complete technical seriousness.

What OMNI Covers Had in Common

Despite the range of contributors, many OMNI covers share a recognizable visual grammar.

The background is often dark or simplified. A single figure, object or environment dominates the composition. The logo is large but usually separated from the main visual action. Cover lines are present, yet they are often placed around the image rather than allowed to fragment it.

There is also a recurring confrontation between the image and the viewer. Faces and humanoid figures frequently look outward. They are not shown escaping, fighting or gazing heroically into the distance in the tradition of earlier pulp covers. They appear aware of being observed.

This directness was particularly effective on a newsstand. The image did not require the reader to understand a fictional narrative. A chrome face, strange eye, emerging planet or impossible machine could establish a complete visual problem in seconds.

OMNI also benefited from the tension between its images and its editorial subjects. A painting that might have appeared purely fantastical elsewhere was placed beside references to genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, space colonization, parapsychology or new scientific research. The surrounding language made the artwork feel less like escape and more like evidence from a possible world.

The Importance of Airbrush

Airbrush became one of the defining tools of late-20th-century commercial futurism, and OMNI displayed its possibilities at an unusually high level.

The technique allowed artists to create uninterrupted gradients, deep shadows, reflective metal and surfaces with almost no visible brushwork. It could make an invented object appear photographed rather than painted.

Yet the artists used that smoothness differently. Sorayama employed it to make chrome feel seductive and flawless. Giger used it to erase the separation between tissue and machinery. Other illustrators used it to build luminous planets, translucent bodies, glass architecture and atmospheres that seemed to emit their own light.

The finish was controlled, but the ideas were often strange. That combination is one reason the work remains visually powerful. The images do not look like loose sketches of possible futures. They present impossible scenes with the confidence of product photography, fashion imagery or scientific documentation.

The Archive That Nearly Disappeared

OMNI’s print edition ended in 1995. The publication moved to an online-only form in 1996 and ceased production completely toward the end of the decade.

The magazine survived through back issues, private collections and digitized scans, but much of the original art became difficult to trace. Some pieces remained with artists or collectors. Others passed through storage facilities and auctions, while part of the publication’s visual record was lost or destroyed.

Jeremy Frommer and Rick Schwartz later assembled material from the Guccione estate and contacted contributing artists in an effort to recover more of the archive. Their 2014 book, The Mind’s Eye: The Art of Omni, brought together 185 images by artists including Giger, Sorayama, Berkey, Venosa, McCall, Olbinski, Chris Moore and others.

The book matters because scans can preserve composition and color only imperfectly. They cannot fully reproduce the scale of an original painting, the transitions created by airbrushed pigment or the particular effect of artwork printed across glossy magazine stock.

The distance between the originals and the surviving digital files is also part of OMNI’s story. The magazine imagined advanced systems of storage, communication and information, yet its own visual history became fragmented enough to require years of physical recovery.

Why the Images Still Hold Up

OMNI’s artwork belongs unmistakably to the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. Its chrome bodies, airbrushed planets and enormous machines carry the visual assumptions of that period. Yet the strongest images do not survive simply because retro futurism has returned to fashion.

They survive because their worlds are specific.

Giger’s machines are not generic symbols of evil technology. They follow an anatomical logic of their own. Sorayama’s figures are not merely silver robots; their reflections, poses and carefully controlled highlights turn the surface into the subject. Berkey’s ships create scale through atmosphere and omission rather than endless mechanical detail.

The work also comes from a period when speculative images were built slowly by hand. Airbrush, paint, masking, glazing and photographic processes demanded decisions that could not be endlessly reversed. The smoothness may resemble later digital imagery, but it was produced through physical resistance, pigment and controlled repetition.

Most importantly, OMNI gave these images editorial authority. It did not present art as a decorative pause between more serious subjects. The artwork could introduce an idea, complicate it or remain stranger than the text beside it.

That may be the magazine’s most enduring visual lesson. A future becomes convincing not when every detail is explained, but when an image is given enough space and confidence to behave as though it already exists.
