Acanthiodes Armatus — Antique Crab Photogravure

This striking zoological plate presents a single heavily armoured crab in a frontal, almost symmetrical composition. Identified on the original plate as Acanthiodes armatus de Haan, the specimen fills much of the frame, bringing close attention to its rugged carapace, prominent spines, articulated legs, and dramatically raised claws.

The monochromatic sepia treatment gives the study an unusually sculptural quality. Deep shadows contrast with pale highlights across the shell, revealing dense surface texture, fine bristles, and sharp projections along the legs. Set against a restrained aged-paper ground, the isolated specimen has both scientific precision and a powerful graphic presence. The plate comes from Franz Doflein's Ostasiatische Dekapoden, published in Munich in 1902 as part of the Bavarian Academy's scientific proceedings.
