Anatomical Study of the Pelvis and Legs — John Browne, 1681

This remarkable seventeenth-century anatomical engraving comes from John Browne’s A Compleat Treatise of the Muscles, as They Appear in the Humane Body, and Arise in Dissection, published in London in 1681. Marked “TAB: XXVII” and “fol. 158,” the plate presents the musculature of the pelvis and lower body through an animated standing figure.

Exposed muscles across the hips and thighs are carefully articulated through dense engraved linework, with individual anatomical structures identified by lettered references. Several muscular layers are separated or folded outward to reveal deeper anatomy. The walking pose, classical landscape ground, and dramatic arrangement transform a scientific demonstration into a distinctly theatrical work of seventeenth-century anatomical art.
