Boötes & Canes Venatici — Sidney Hall Celestial Chart, 1825
This remarkable 1825 celestial chart by Sidney Hall brings together Boötes, Canes Venatici, Coma Berenices and Quadrans Muralis in an elaborate combination of astronomy and classical imagery. Boötes the Ploughman dominates the composition while holding the leashes of the hunting dogs Asterion and Chara, with stars mapped directly across the illustrated figures.
Originally published as Plate 10 of Urania's Mirror, the chart combines delicate engraved linework with vivid hand-applied color. Red drapery, golden-brown hair, dark hunting dogs and a warm cream ground create an exceptionally decorative interpretation of the night sky while preserving the astronomical markings and constellation relationships of the original chart.
