California Vertical Land Motion Map
This scientific visualization illustrates vertical land motion across California between 2015 and 2023 using satellite radar observations. Produced by researchers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NOAA, the map reveals where the state's surface is gradually sinking (subsidence) and rising (uplift).
Created using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), the visualization highlights subtle elevation changes caused by groundwater withdrawal, soil compaction, tectonic activity, and other natural and human influences. The result is both an invaluable scientific resource and a striking contemporary cartographic artwork.
