Careers Ahead — Beard, WPA Illinois, 1936–1941

Careers Ahead is an inventive WPA-era design that transforms the idea of education and professional opportunity into an abstract arrangement of shapes, lines and tool-like forms. Green, vivid blue, warm tan, black and cream overlap across the composition, while a tall white vertical element and green triangular form establish a strong architectural structure through the center.

Created for the Federal Art Project in Illinois, the poster combines geometric construction with freer painted edges and sweeping curves. Narrow lettering announces “Careers” above the composition, while the oversized word “Ahead” anchors the bottom. The result is an unusually abstract WPA design whose visual language suggests planning, technical knowledge and the possibilities of future work without relying on a conventional narrative scene.
