Chocolat Klaus — Leonetto Cappiello, 1903

A woman in a flowing green dress rides a brilliant red horse across a deep black field in Leonetto Cappiello’s 1903 advertisement for Chocolat Klaus. The horse rears forward while blue reins curl through the composition and the rider’s pale patterned cape spreads behind her, creating movement from only a handful of carefully chosen colors.

Cappiello eliminates almost every trace of background scenery, allowing the red horse, green dress, and large yellow “Chocolat Klaus” lettering to command the poster. The Library of Congress notes that the image remained a logo for the Swiss chocolate company for fifty years. Printed in Paris by P. Vercasson & Cie., the original is an exceptionally large color lithograph measuring 159 × 115 cm.
