Clustered Barnacles — Natural History Plate I
This historical natural-history plate presents a dense cluster of barnacle-like marine forms isolated against a broad cream ground. Irregular conical shells rise from a dark brown base, overlapping one another in a compact formation and revealing dark apertures, ridged surfaces, and subtle differences in shape.
Fine engraved lines create much of the surface texture, complemented by restrained washes of gray, beige, ochre, olive, and reddish brown. The small “Tab. I.” inscription at upper right is surrounded by generous negative space, giving the specimen an unusually sculptural presence while retaining the observational character of an archival scientific plate.
