Dactylopius Citri — Antonio Berlese

This late nineteenth-century scientific plate presents two studies of citrus fruit affected by Dactylopius citri, the historical name used for the citrus mealybug. Clusters of yellow-green and warm orange fruit are arranged around branching stems, with pale cotton-like material spreading across the fruit and surrounding the points where the stems meet.

The illustration combines scientific observation with an unusually rich natural palette. Olive green, ochre, orange, brown, and cream are built through fine stippling and lithographic linework, while small lettered annotations preserve the analytical character of the original plate. Against the warm paper ground, the two fruit studies form a balanced and distinctive example of nineteenth-century botanical and entomological illustration.
