Dolichos Pruriens — Tropical Botanical Study

This eighteenth-century botanical plate presents Dolichos pruriens as a climbing specimen with a long cascade of deep blue flowers. Broad olive-green leaves fill the upper part of the composition, while a slender golden stem curves through the open cream background.

The dark blue flowers are balanced by pale cream and softly pink details, creating an unusually restrained palette for a historical botanical study. At lower right, a reddish-brown hairy pod and small seed provide a separate study of the plant's fruit. The plate comes from Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin's Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia, an eighteenth-century botanical work documenting plants associated with the Caribbean and tropical Americas.
