Fossil Shells and Ammonite — Plate 12
This early nineteenth-century geological plate arranges several fossil specimens across a broad field of warm, aged paper. Two substantial shell forms dominate the composition, their layered surfaces described through closely spaced engraved lines, while a long tapering tubular specimen occupies the space above.
At right, a darker fragment of stone contains a tightly coiled fossil impression, introducing a compact geometric form beside the larger shells. Muted beige, brown, gray, and cream tones reinforce the archival character of the plate. A surviving handwritten instruction near the upper edge adds an unusual glimpse of the practical process behind the preparation of the illustration.
