Gibbon Deuil

Gibbon Deuil presents a slender gibbon balanced across a lightly drawn branch, its elongated limbs defining much of the composition. The animal turns its dark face toward the viewer while one arm extends horizontally and the other reaches downward, creating a spare but unusually expressive zoological study.

Fine lines and restrained shading describe the short fur in gray-brown, olive, cream, and near-black tones. The branch remains lightly rendered against the warm paper ground, leaving generous negative space around the figure. Original scientific and publication inscriptions survive within the plate, preserving its distinctive nineteenth-century natural history character.
