Hestia Belia — Normal and Anomalous Butterfly Study
This nineteenth-century entomological plate compares two butterfly specimens identified in its original caption as Hestia Belia Westwood. The upper figure represents a normal specimen, while the lower records an anatomical anomaly, allowing differences in the form and venation of the wings to be studied directly.
Large, lightly outlined forewings contrast with more densely patterned hindwings, where dark veins, spots, and pale enclosed forms create a striking graphic structure. Rendered almost entirely through fine brown-black linework on warm cream paper, the plate combines the precision of scientific documentation with the restrained visual character of nineteenth-century natural-history illustration.
