I Like Books turns reading into an airborne adventure in Leonard Kessler’s playful 1962 illustration. Three young readers stand together in the basket of an enormous hot-air balloon, books open in their hands as they float above a tiny city. The words “I LIKE BOOKS” stretch dramatically across the striped balloon overhead.

Kessler uses a restrained combination of turquoise-blue, black and white, allowing loose linework and the unusually tall composition to carry the design. Small clouds and buildings emphasize the balloon’s height, while the children and their books keep the poster’s reading theme at its center. Created for the Children’s Book Council, the design captures the imaginative possibilities of reading through a simple, lighthearted visual metaphor.
