A giant purple spider looms over the seated figure of Kurokumo Ōji in this dramatic 1867 woodblock print by Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. With its wide eyes, exposed teeth, and spreading legs, the supernatural creature turns the scene into a vivid encounter between folklore, fantasy, and horror.

The work belongs to Yoshitoshi’s series Beauty and Valor in the Novel Suikoden. Richly patterned robes, intense colors, bold outlines, and the exaggerated scale of the spider create a theatrical composition that still feels strikingly modern.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was a leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Known for his warriors, legends, ghosts, and supernatural scenes, he brought unusual psychological intensity and expressive detail to traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
