Jean-Baptiste Audebert’s Le Jocko presents a young orangutan climbing through the spare branches of a tree. One arm reaches upward while the hands and feet grip the textured wood, giving the otherwise spacious natural-history composition a graceful sense of movement.

Warm russet and chestnut fur contrasts with the darker face and extremities, while exceptionally fine engraved lines describe the coat, bark and patches of green lichen. The broad cream ground and delicate period lettering preserve the refined character of late eighteenth-century zoological illustration.
