This early twentieth-century botanical plate presents two enlarged microscopic studies of plant tissue, numbered 3 and 4. Layers of elongated cells, irregular internal structures, and clustered microscopic forms are rendered in brick red, yellow, slate blue, and cream, creating a richly detailed record of botanical anatomy.
The upper study moves from densely arranged reddish and yellow cellular structures into a concentration of dark blue-gray forms, while the lower figure presents a more dispersed network of cells and internal bodies. Originally created for scientific study, the repeated shapes and restrained coloration give the plate an unexpectedly abstract visual character while preserving the precision of historical botanical illustration.
