NASA's Planetary Radar Spies (Another) Peanut-Shaped Asteroid

This sequence of radar images shows the near-Earth asteroid 2024 ON as observed by NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar on September 16, 2024. Captured one day before the asteroid's close approach to Earth, the series documents nearly one complete rotation over approximately six hours.

The observations reveal a classic contact-binary or "peanut-shaped" asteroid composed of two rounded lobes connected by a narrow neck. Radar imaging resolves surface features only a few meters across, allowing scientists to study the asteroid's shape, rotation, and surface characteristics while refining its future orbit. Although classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid because of its orbit, 2024 ON poses no danger to Earth for the foreseeable future.
