Pistia stratiotes — Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin
This eighteenth-century botanical plate depicts Pistia stratiotes, commonly known as water lettuce, as a broad floating rosette with a remarkable network of fine roots descending beneath it. Large overlapping leaves fill the upper composition, their ribbed surfaces alternating between pale yellow-green and deep olive to create a strong striped pattern.
Long branching roots provide a delicate counterpoint to the substantial foliage, while a smaller offset plant and isolated reproductive details record additional features of the species. The illustration appears as plate 225 in Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin's Selectarum stirpium Americanarum historia. Precise botanical observation and unusually graphic foliage give the plate a distinctive presence while preserving the character of eighteenth-century scientific illustration.
