Roman Coronagraph Focal Plane Mask

This photograph shows the flight focal plane mask for the Coronagraph Instrument aboard NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Carefully engineered optical masks within each circular aperture help suppress the overwhelming brightness of distant stars, allowing astronomers to directly observe faint planets orbiting beyond them.

Manufactured with extraordinary precision, some masking features are only about the width of a human hair.
