This extraordinary HiRISE image reveals sediment-filled depressions within Tithonium Chasma, part of the immense Valles Marineris canyon system on Mars. Captured by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the scene contrasts ancient cratered bedrock with younger smooth sediment deposits that accumulated across the canyon floor.

The broad, light-toned plains resemble lakes and ponds from orbit, but they are actually composed of wind-deposited dust and sand that gradually filled the lowest areas of the canyon over immense spans of time. Together the contrasting terrains preserve a vivid record of Mars' changing geological history.
