Frank S. Nicholson’s See America celebrates the monumental landscape of the American West through the bold visual language of WPA-era travel design. Two cowboys on horseback pause beside a stream beneath an immense desert rock formation, their small figures emphasizing the dramatic scale of the surrounding landscape.

Created between 1936 and 1939 for the United States Travel Bureau, the poster uses broad areas of tan, brown, pale blue and muted blue-green to transform the western landscape into a powerful graphic composition. Monumental rock forms, sparse vegetation and restrained typography capture the distinctive character of American travel promotion during the Works Progress Administration era.
