Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia — Ferdinand Bauer
This elaborate botanical title page was created for Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin’s Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia. A tall ornamental oval surrounds the Latin lettering, while flowers, leaves, seed pods, butterflies, and small insects gather densely around its edges.
Crimson, yellow, orange, turquoise blue, pink, and deep burgundy give the composition an unusually vivid palette. The carefully observed natural forms contrast with the formal interlaced border and typography, placing the work between eighteenth-century botanical documentation and decorative art. The luxury second edition of Jacquin’s botanical work appeared around 1780–81, with the title-page illustration attributed to Ferdinand Lucas Bauer.
