Skeleton with Rhinoceros — Jan Wandelaar

This extraordinary anatomical image comes from Bernhard Siegfried Albinus’s monumental Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani, first published in Leiden in 1747. Created in collaboration with artist Jan Wandelaar, the composition places a precisely rendered standing anatomical figure before the massive form of a rhinoceros.

Trees, architectural masonry, rocks, and vegetation transform the anatomical study into an elaborate natural-history landscape. Albinus and Wandelaar pursued exceptional anatomical accuracy while using imaginative backgrounds to create perspective and depth. The combination of human anatomy, natural history, and intricate eighteenth-century printmaking makes this one of the most distinctive images associated with Albinus’s celebrated atlas.
