This hand-colored eighteenth-century natural history plate depicts two small birds from Surinam arranged around the branches and exposed roots of a weathered tree. Above, an orange-and-black bird rests on a bare branch, while below, a vivid turquoise-blue bird bends toward a small insect near the ground.

Fine engraved lines describe the birds’ feathers alongside bark, moss, ferns, stones, and low vegetation. Saturated orange and turquoise provide strong areas of color against earthy greens and browns, while the generous cream ground preserves the open character of the original historical plate.
