Studies of the Digestive Organs — Juan Valverde de Amusco

€39,94

This sixteenth-century anatomical plate comes from Juan Valverde de Amusco’s Anatomia del corpo humano, an influential Renaissance anatomy book first published in Rome in 1556. Headed Tavola II. del Lib. III., the page brings together multiple studies of the abdominal organs, including two larger torso figures alongside smaller isolated anatomical structures.

The arrangement combines anatomical instruction with an unusually decorative visual language. Exposed intestines and surrounding tissues appear within elaborate armor-like torsos, while sculptural heads, layered forms, fine hatching, and individually numbered specimens give the page its distinctive Renaissance character. Restrained black linework against warm aged paper preserves the appearance of an early printed anatomical plate.
