This remarkable anatomical plate belongs to Govard Bidloo’s Anatomia humani corporis, published in Amsterdam in 1685 and illustrated by Gérard de Lairesse. Two complementary studies examine the human skull: a frontal cranium with lettered anatomical references above and an opened skull revealing the internal cranial cavity below.

Rather than presenting the specimens as isolated diagrams, de Lairesse places them among folded cloth and studio-like objects, giving the anatomical material a striking physical presence. Fine engraved lines describe bone surfaces, cavities, shadows, and fabric with exceptional precision, combining scientific observation with the sophisticated realism of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking.
