SWOT Captures Planet-Rumbling Greenland Tsunami

This scientific visualization presents water elevation measurements collected by the international Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite over Dickson Fjord in eastern Greenland following the tsunami triggered by a massive landslide in September 2023.

The color overlay represents differences in water elevation measured by SWOT's Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn), revealing how water became significantly higher along one side of the fjord as the tsunami continued to oscillate within the narrow valley. The visualization demonstrates the remarkable capability of satellite radar to measure water surface height inside steep coastal fjords and contributes to research on tsunamis, landslides, and Earth system processes.
