The Golden Cap — W. W. Denslow, 1900
The Golden Cap is a vivid color illustration from the 1900 first edition of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Set against a warm red field, the scene gathers a remarkable cast of Oz characters around the imposing Cowardly Lion. Golden yellow, deep blue, red and black are organized through Denslow’s crisp outlines and highly decorative approach to costume and character.
The printed caption beneath the plate reads “You must give me the Golden Cap.” Denslow’s combination of flat color, expressive drawing and eccentric detail helped establish the original visual identity of Baum’s Oz. Published in Chicago and New York by Geo. M. Hill Co., the first edition contained 24 unnumbered leaves of color plates and remains an important example of turn-of-the-century American book illustration.
