The Mediterranean Apogon
The Mediterranean Apogon presents a vividly colored fish in profile against a lightly engraved view of the Island of Vulcano. Pink-orange scales outlined in gold are interrupted by deep blue-black bands, while the large dorsal and tail fins introduce muted blue, pink, yellow, and gray.
Behind the specimen, a smoking volcanic island rises beyond calm water and two small sailing boats. Fine landscape lines remain deliberately restrained, allowing the fish to dominate the composition while giving the plate a distinctive Mediterranean setting. Original inscriptions identify the subject as Apogon Trimaculatus and “The Mediterranean Apogon.”
