Anterior View of the Human Body — Paolo Mascagni
This striking anatomical plate comes from Paolo Mascagni’s monumental anatomical project Anatomia Universa, illustrated by Antonio Serantoni. A full-length human figure is presented with successive anatomical layers selectively exposed, revealing the relationship between muscles, skeleton, tendons, nerves, and surrounding structures.
The raised arm and asymmetrical pose allow different levels of anatomy to be examined across the shoulders, chest, arms, pelvis, and legs. Rich red musculature contrasts with pale bone and connective structures against a warm cream ground, while delicate engraved lines preserve individual muscle fibers and branching anatomical details. The result combines scientific observation with the exceptional scale and elegance characteristic of early nineteenth-century anatomical illustration.
