Baza Ceylonensis — John Gerrard Keulemans

This nineteenth-century ornithological plate portrays two Baza ceylonensis—an adult and a younger bird—among broken branches, moss, and slender foliage. The larger raptor rises prominently at the left, its elongated crest, hooked bill, brilliant yellow eye, and strongly barred plumage rendered with careful naturalistic detail. A smaller bird occupies the lower right, creating a compact study of contrasting age and form.

Deep chocolate brown and warm chestnut markings alternate with cream and gray across the feathers, while vivid yellow feet and eyes provide restrained points of color. Loose washes of ochre and cool gray soften the background without competing with the birds. Created by John Gerrard Keulemans for William Vincent Legge’s A History of the Birds of Ceylon, the plate preserves the historical name Baza ceylonensis. The taxon is now generally classified as Aviceda jerdoni ceylonensis, a form of Jerdon’s baza.
