Blossom Viewing at Asuka Hill — Kitao Shigemasa, 1772–1776

€39,94

Blossom Viewing at Asuka Hill captures an intimate spring gathering beneath flowering cherry trees. Three women and a man enjoy a small tea party surrounded by delicate blossoms, patterned robes, serving vessels, and a gently rendered landscape. Japanese calligraphy flows across the upper portion of the composition, adding another graceful visual element to the scene.

Created by Kitao Shigemasa between approximately 1772 and 1776, this color woodblock print depicts the Japanese tradition of hanami, or blossom viewing, at Asukayama. Its restrained pink, russet, olive, cream, and black palette, elegant figures, flowering branches, and fine linework create a beautifully intimate vision of springtime leisure during Japan’s Edo period.
