Bullfinch × Canary — 1889 Bird Illustration
This late nineteenth-century bird illustration depicts a hybrid identified in its original German caption as “Dompfaff × Kanarienvogel,” or Bullfinch × Canary. The bird stands upright on a simple perch, its dark wings and long tail rendered through closely worked black lines and delicate hatching.
The composition is restrained and observational, with the specimen occupying most of the illustrated field. Fine cross-hatching creates depth around the perch, while the warm cream tone of the aged page gives the monochrome drawing the unmistakable character of a nineteenth-century natural-history publication.
