Japanese Fish Studies — Fauna Japonica
Two vividly observed marine fish occupy this elegant plate from Fauna Japonica, the landmark nineteenth-century natural history survey of Japan. Presented individually in lateral profile, the specimens combine precise anatomical observation with delicate coloring and the generous open space characteristic of historical zoological illustration.
The slender upper fish is rendered in silvery cream, coral red and gold, while the larger specimen below creates a striking contrast in deep violet, charcoal and brilliant yellow. Fin rays, scales, gill structures and facial details are carefully articulated throughout. The restrained composition and warm aged ground give the plate a distinctive balance of scientific clarity and decorative character.
