Japanese Flying Gurnards — Plate II

This striking early 20th-century zoological plate presents two Japanese fishes viewed from above, their extraordinary enlarged pectoral fins spread outward like wings. Both specimens are rendered in vivid orange-red tones against a muted olive-green aquatic ground, creating an unusually bold composition for a scientific illustration.

The smaller specimen at left displays broad green fins with dark oval markings and pale blue edging. The larger fish at right combines an intricately patterned red-orange body with expansive olive-green fins scattered with pale spots. Fine linework records the unusual heads, elongated bodies, fin rays, and contrasting coloration.
