Mercantile Calendar for 1860 — Victorian Chromolithograph

€39,94

This richly decorated nineteenth-century calendar combines practical typography with the elaborate visual language of Victorian advertising. The calendar for 1860 occupies the center of the composition, surrounded by flowers, cherubs, ornamental scrollwork, rich drapery and colorful allegorical imagery.

An ornate portrait of Johann Gutenberg appears at lower left, celebrating the history of printing while connecting the imagery to John H. Duyckinck's New York stationery and printing business. Printed in 1859 as a color chromolithograph, the work combines commercial design, typography and decorative illustration in an exceptionally detailed period composition.
