NASA's InSight Records the Sound of a Martian Impact

This official NASA visualization combines imagery from the InSight Mars lander with a seismogram representing one of the largest meteoroid impacts ever detected on another planet. The waveform illustrates vibrations recorded by the lander's highly sensitive SEIS seismometer after a massive impact struck the Martian surface.

Because the original seismic signals were far below the range of human hearing, NASA accelerated them 100 times to produce an audible recording of the event. Together with orbital images of the newly formed crater, the data provided scientists with an unprecedented opportunity to study a recent impact on Mars.
