Five oceanic fishes are arranged with remarkable clarity across this late nineteenth-century zoological plate, each specimen shown in precise lateral profile against a warm cream ground. The dramatically enlarged eye of the central fish provides a striking focal point, surrounded by smaller forms rendered with delicate scales, fins and anatomical markings.

Published in George Brown Goode and Tarleton H. Bean’s Oceanic Ichthyology in 1895, the plate reflects the exacting visual language of historical scientific illustration. Fine linework and stippled shading describe the specimens while figure numbers, measurement marks and taxonomic captions retain the original documentary character. The generous negative space gives this technical study an unexpectedly refined graphic quality.

The plate includes Lampanyctus lacerta, Lampanyctus Güntheri, Ceratoscopelus maderensis, Lampanyctus alatus and Diaphus theta. Its combination of marine zoology, restrained monochrome drawing and softly aged paper makes it a distinctive example of nineteenth-century natural-history publishing.
