Passiflora quadrangularis — Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin
This eighteenth-century botanical illustration presents Passiflora quadrangularis, commonly known as giant granadilla, through an elaborate study of foliage, flowers, tendrils, and fruit. Large golden-olive leaves surround the climbing stem, their surfaces filled with intricate networks of dark veins. A spectacular passionflower opens below in rich pink and magenta, framed by a dense corona of exceptionally long blue-purple filaments.
Above the open flower, a partially closed bloom records another stage of development, while delicate curling tendrils reveal the plant's climbing habit. A large golden-yellow fruit is illustrated separately at lower right, its ribbed and mottled surface providing a vivid counterpoint to the intricate flower. From Nicolaus Joseph von Jacquin's Selectarum stirpium Americanarum historia, the plate combines scientific observation with the extraordinary color and complexity of eighteenth-century botanical illustration.
