Purple-Capped Lory — Edward Lear
A brilliantly colored Purple-Capped Lory dominates this horizontal nineteenth-century ornithological plate. Shown in profile on a textured branch, the bird combines a rich crimson body with layered emerald-green wings, a dark blue crown, flashes of blue and golden yellow, and a powerful orange-yellow hooked beak.
The saturated plumage contrasts beautifully with a finely engraved landscape of trees, palms, distant vegetation, hills, and water. Rendered largely in monochrome, the surrounding scenery keeps attention on the bird while adding remarkable depth and delicacy. The original plate identifies the subject as Lorius domicellus, the Purple-Capped Lory, described as native of the Moluccas.
