Sea Anemones — The World of the Sea, 1869
This richly colored nineteenth-century natural-history plate presents a varied collection of sea anemones across a rocky underwater landscape. Seventeen numbered specimens appear among dark stone formations, a pebbled seabed and muted blue-green water, combining scientific observation with an unusually atmospheric marine setting.
Tall ribbed anemones, compact flower-like forms and delicate crowns of radiating tentacles create a diverse composition in soft blue, yellow, coral, green, ivory and earthy brown. Original specimen numbers and the printed identification key preserve the plate’s scientific purpose, while the underwater setting gives it the immersive character of Victorian marine illustration.
