Surf Riders, Honolulu — Charles W. Bartlett

Five surfers move through the breaking waves off Honolulu in this color woodcut by British artist Charles W. Bartlett. The figures occupy a narrow band across the middle of the composition, surrounded by an unusually expansive sea rendered in layered blue, turquoise, green, and white.

Created around 1920–21, the print is especially striking for Bartlett's treatment of moving water. Repeated lines and irregular areas of color give the waves a strong graphic rhythm, while the pale horizon and open sky keep the composition spacious. The Library of Congress describes the original as a color woodcut showing five surfers riding waves in Hawaii.
