Tanager-1 First Light
This visualization celebrates the successful first-light observations from Tanager-1, the first hyperspectral satellite of the Carbon Mapper Coalition carrying NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Carbon Mapper Imaging Spectrometer. The data were collected over Karachi, Pakistan, on September 19, 2024, demonstrating the instrument's ability to measure hundreds of wavelengths of reflected sunlight across Earth's surface.
The front face of the cube displays a natural-color satellite image, while the stacked colored layers behind it represent hundreds of spectral bands recorded from the same scene. Together they form a hyperspectral data cube that enables scientists to identify materials by their unique spectral fingerprints, supporting research into greenhouse gas emissions, vegetation, minerals, water resources, agriculture, and environmental monitoring.
