The Evil Eye: Do You See Anything?

Two frightened figures recoil beneath the question “Do You See Anything?” as an enormous curling creature emerges within a strange and theatrical landscape. Created to advertise Chas. H. Yale’s The Evil Eye, the composition uses dramatic scale, deep shadows, pale highlights, and expressive forms to capture the mystery and spectacle of turn-of-the-century popular theatre.

Published in 1900 by the U.S. Printing Co. of Cincinnati and New York, this black-and-white lithographic poster promoted the fantastic stage production The Evil Eye, or The Many, Merry Mishaps of Nid and the Weird, Wonderful Wanderings of Nod. Its surreal imagery and elaborate display lettering make it a distinctive surviving example of American theatrical advertising from the period.
