The Granulated Perch presents a large fish in profile against a lightly engraved view of Niagara Falls. Its elongated body fills the composition, with carefully patterned scales, dark vertical markings, raised dorsal fins, and sharply articulated fin rays creating a precise nineteenth-century zoological study.
Muted green and blue-green tones transition into a pale cream underside, while vivid red-orange fins and a golden eye introduce concentrated areas of color. Fine lines describing the surrounding water lead toward cliffs, trees, falling water, and mist in the distance. The original inscriptions identify the specimen as Perca Granulata (The Granulated Perch), associate it with the Falls of Niagara, and describe it as native to America.
